This seminar covers the Federal HIPAA and California laws that control confidentiality and the release of general and specialized patient health information. Provisions of the 2009 HITECH Act will be discussed, Discussion topics will include the various types of requests, including subpoenas, which are received in a Health Information Department and provides guidance on how to respond to each. Also included will be the general impacts of Meaningful Use Regulations.
This seminar will provide the attendee with a better understanding of confidentiality and release of information, including subpoenas. The attendee will be able to learn about:

• The California Confidentiality of Medical Information Act
• Attorney requests for medical information
• Service of and response to subpoenas
• Patient Access Requirements and the impact of Meaningful Use Regulations

• The requirements for the protection of HIV test results
• The implications of the HIPAA privacy regulations on the above laws
• Impact of identity theft on HIM practices
